After/Image: Los Angeles Outside the FrameNext week Angel City Press author & GRAMMY® winner Lynell George will share insights from her new book After/Image: Los Angeles Outside the Frame--the way only Lynell George can share insights. With intellect, grace, and a knowing laugh. This native Angeleno has experienced the changes in her town, and she’s outspoken about how those changes feel. About how she feels deep down. About why, and how, and what she can do, and we can do.... After/Image is a collection of her provocative thoughts, captured in essays, photographs, profiles, and reportage. She gets beneath-the-surface —L.A.’s surface and her own. She wanders through the past and the here-and-now, finding meaning where others find concrete. What inspired her book? She wants you to know:

As a writer, I’ve spent years trying to capsize old notions or cliched beliefs about L.A., by telling deeper stories about the place and the people who live in communities that are often under-reported and therefore not often part of a larger understanding of what it is to be an Angeleno, what it is to really live in and explore all the many Los Angeleses, what they offer and what they all meant. In this context, I began to ask myself what it means to be a native, how has Los Angeles shaped me, those I know? And for all the change around me, what is the Los Angeles I hold inside me?

Starting March 18, George will tell you more, share her notions of the town she calls home--her visions of Los Angeles outside the frame--as she covers ground from Los Feliz to Leimert Park to Pasadena. There’s a time and a place for you to meet Lynell--she wants to meet you right back. And don’t forget to congratulate Lynell George for her GRAMMY® Award for Best Album Notes. She wrote the incredible story of Otis Redding Live At The Whisky A Go Go: The Complete Recordings. Released as a six-CD box set in October of 2016, Otis Redding Live At The Whisky A Go Go offers the entirety of Otis Redding’s historic performances at the famed Sunset Strip club. In this video clip, George discusses the importance of the Whisky A Go Go and Los Angeles for this famed singer who brought soul to the Strip.
